Chicago’s Magnificent Mile

Chicago’s Magnificent Mile is the city’s answer to Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, California. Along this stretch of prime Chicago property, tourists can immerse themselves in a virtually endless row of retail outlets, eclectic restaurants, sightseeing opportunities and a entertainment attractions.

Shopping on the Magnificent Mile

The Magnificent Mile is located on Michigan Avenue, and is bordered by the Chicago River to the south and Oak Street to the north. Nestled up against downtown, the area offers over 3 million square feet of retail shopping space. Stores range from big-name department stores to small local boutiques. Of the more than 450 shopping outlets, some of the most noteworthy include Barneys New York, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Niketown and Disney. Chicago’s Magnificent Mile is situated in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the city.

To cater to these wealthy locals, the side streets are dotted with some of the most lavish, upscale shops in the country. Cartier, Bulgari, Prada, Jimmy Choo and Marc Jacobs can all be found here. Whether window-shopping or searching for the perfect Chicago souvenir, these shops are sure to deliver in spades.

Restaurants on the Magnificent Mile

Though undoubtedly a shopper’s paradise, there are plenty of other ways to fill a day spent on the Magnificent Mile. Well over 200 restaurants populate the strip, providing plenty of opportunities to satisfy your appetite. Classic Chicago-style hot dog and pizza joints intermingle with more worldly cuisine, ensuring that any craving will be accommodated. From fast food restaurants to outdoor cafes and classy steak places, there truly is no shortage of food options when exploring the Magnificent Mile.

Chicago Landmarks on the Magnificent Mile

In between food and shopping, visitors can snap photos of the many Chicago landmarks on or near the Magnificent Mile. The Old Water Tower, built in 1869, is one of the area’s architectural highlights. The Wrigley Building, Michigan Avenue Bridge, John Hancock Center and Park Tower are just a few of the other unique structures worth checking out in the area.

Entertainment on the Magnificent Mile

The Magnificent Mile also plays host to a number of interesting and unique Chicago entertainment venues. Take in a bit of live theater at the Lookingglass Theatre Company or get some laughs at the world-famous Second City comedy club. For kids, the Adler Planetarium and Children’s Museum are both nearby. Museum destinations such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum are also in the vicinity.
